Critical component failure in Jeep window regulators!

After having gone through three regulator failures of the left rear window in my 2006 Jeep Liberty, I decided to take matters into my own hands to see if I could affect a repair that Jeep wanted $450 to fix. I had already shelled out $135 for a used regulator that I was careful not to use after installation. I just wanted the rear driver side window to remain closed. That did not work as the small plastic riser failed anyway. Go figure!

The problem, and weak point, in the riser assembly is where the worm cable on which the plastic riser is connected. The plastic at this point, which is also a high stress point, looks to be painfully thin! Any amateur engineering student would easily see that the possibility of failure, even with limited use, was very high. This part needed to be made of steel. At which point, it would be on a par with all the other critical lifting parts. Exactly why, the designers of this vehicle, ignored what was sure to become a problem is beyond me. Suffice it to say that I’ll wager there are quite a few owners of Jeep products that are shelling out wads of their own money to keep their windows closed.

So, as a first effort, I decided to order a 2002 to 3/16/2006 Jeep Liberty Window Regulator Repair Kit for Window Mount / Bracket. Rear Left (Drivers Side) # 741-526, 741-527 from Amazon.com. The cost was about $60 and I’ve been forewarned that the pop rivet supplied may be a bit too big.  I’ll post a follow up blog to report how this home repair went.
