Caloric content of various pasta sauces with meat!

hundredandfortyUsing the various sauces that are available on pasta noodles can be a problem when you try to figure out just how many calories you’re getting per serving. Even figuring out what a ‘serving’ is can pose problems all on their own!

Here is the ground rule I used for this post:

      1. A serving would consist of 100 grams of pasta and 40 grams of sauce.

OK! That was easy. Note that is you want to increase the serving, that it will be easy to recompute everything.

SAUCE 1 A simple meatless tomato sauce seasoned with oregano and basil.

This sauce is as simple as a sauce can get. The only ‘contributor’ to calories comes from the can of tomato sauce. For my test, I used an 8 ounce or 227 gram amount. I placed this in a frying pan, applied medium heat and a little water, then added in a tsp of dried oregano and basil. This was cooked down until the sauce thickened up and served over some American Beauty spaghetti noodles.

Calories = .33 cal per gram – 40 grams of sauce then equaled about 13 calories. The pasta, (at 3.6 calories per gram) came to 360 calories for a total of just 373 calories! Not bad!

SAUCE 2 A McCormick mix with one pound of hamburger!

OK, time to kick it up a notch! I took a package of McCormick brand spaghetti sauce mix, added in a pound of brown hamburger (30 fat to 70 lean). Cooked it according to directions and found the following:

Calories = 3.3 cal per gram – 40 grams of sauce then equaled about 132 calories. The pasta, (at 3.6 calories per gram) came to 360 calories for a total of 492 calories. Still not too bad.

SAUCE 3A commercial grade of generic meat flavored sauce!

What about those jars and can of ‘meat flavored’ pasta sauces? While I don’t prefer to use them, I thought to add them here. In this case, I mixed in a pound of the same type of ground beef.

Calories = 3.2 cal per gram – 40 grams of sauce then equaled about 128 calories. The pasta, (at 3.6 calories per gram) came to 360 calories for a total of 488 calories. OK. I’m seeing a trend here…

Summary: For a dish containing 100 grams of pasta and 40 grams of sauce the calorie range was 373 to 492. By averaging those two figures, I arrived at about 430 calories per serving with the amounts described. If you’re on a 500 calories per meal sort of diet, as I was, that still allowed me 70 calories for whatever side I wanted to add; garlic bread came to my mind!
